As electronic cigarettes have skyrocketed in popularity, there has been a lot of discussion about it being the far better alternative to traditional tobacco cigarettes. Many longtime smokers are turning to e-cigs to help them transition away from tobacco cigarettes, with the goal of improving their overall health and cutting down on negative side effects. However, as with any new product that is touted for its benefits, there have been a lot of questions raised about e-cigarettes, mainly due to the fact that they are so new, and many people are unfamiliar with them.
As time goes on, the number of scientific studies supporting e-cigs as an alternative to tobacco cigarettes are starting to pile up, with the facts weighing in heavily in favor of e-cigs. Public Health England recently released a statement that they have found e-cigs to be a staggering 95 percent less harmful than tobacco cigarettes – a fact that is pretty hard to argue with.
That being said, there are still many people that have questions about e-cigarette ingredients, specifically the e-liquid safety. However, there have been limited studies conducted to study any possible effects of vape juice, with one scientific publication simply coming to the conclusion that ingredient labeling and general regulation is a good idea, something that is actually just a good idea for anything you choose to ingest. Luckily, when considering e-cigarette liquid, safety concerns can be managed by simply gaining a clearer understanding of the handful of simple ingredients in the e-juice.
Examining each ingredient individually is very informative in helpful in determining if it’s right for you.
What is E-Liquid and How Does It Work?
Before delving into the specifics of e-liquid, you should have a basic understanding of the purpose it serves in vaping. E-liquid, e-juice, or vape juice, is the actual liquid poured in small doses into an electronic cigarette or vaporizer, and when heated, produces a smokable vapor.

What Ingredients are in E-Liquid?
Generally, there are only 3 to 4 ingredients in any quality vape juice, which makes it easy to examine the safety of each.
- Propylene Glycol (PG): An odorless, tasteless substance, propylene glycol (PG) is used as part of the liquid base for e-juice. The FDA acknowledges PG as “generally considered to be a safe chemical” for food use, based on studies that go back as early as the 1940s. A 1978 study confirmed that PG has little to no harmful effects when inhaled, as it is in vaping.
- Vegetable Glycerin (VG): Vegetable glycerin (VG) is a substance made from plant oils, and has many uses both in food and cosmetic products. As one of the safest products on the planet, there hasn’t been a large number of studies needed to test its effects. However, the SIDS initial assessment categorized it as having extremely low toxicity levels, perfectly appropriate for human consumption.
- Flavoring (Natural or Artificial): E-liquid flavoring meets the FDA standards for consumption, just as any flavoring that could be added to any supermarket food. Scientists are interested in conducting more testing about how the effects of flavoring may change when inhaled rather than eaten, but so far there has not been solid evidence to show there is any cause for concern.
- Nicotine (Optional): Nicotine is an optional ingredient in e-juice, most often added to help former tobacco users taper off their use of traditional cigarettes. Many people become alarmed just at the mention of nicotine, especially because it is associated with tobacco cigarettes, which we know to be highly carcinogenic. A 1996 study stated that nicotine doesn’t have significant health effects, with its only real issue being its addictive nature.
By examining each individual ingredient of e-juice, each user can determine what is best for themselves.
