What is a Vape Tank and what are its components?
A vape tank, also known as an atomizer, is the vape device component that holds your vape juice as well as the coil which heats up and vaporizes the e-liquid. On most vape devices, the tank sits on top of the battery. Tanks are usually made of glass cylindrical bodies with metallic tops and bottoms. They contain a wick that soaks up e-liquid which is then heated by the coil.
What should I consider when buying a tank?
Some of the main aspects to consider when to find the best vape tanks for you are:
- E-liquid Capacity - how much vape juice the tank holds.
- Coil resistance (Higher resistance coils provide more of a cigarette like throat hit while lower resistance coils are geared toward producing more vapor).
- E-liquid Refilling System - how the tank is refilled with vape juice. Some tanks are top-fill designs, others are bottom-fill designs. In addition, many tanks have additional child-proofing or leak-protection features.
- Adjustable Airflow Control - many tanks allow you to tweak the airflow to customize your experience.
- Construction materials - consider upgrading to Pyrex glass or reinforced designs to keep the tank from cracking.
What are Sub-Ohm Tanks?
Sub-ohm tanks for vapes feature low-resistance (less than 1 ohm) and high e-liquid capacity. They are geared towards cloud-chasing and the production of huge, voluminous clouds. Thus, they have become very popular, especially in professional vaping circles.
What are Rebuildable Tanks?
Rebuildable Atomizer Tanks, or RBA’s, are tanks designed for custom built coils. Thus, they are generally the preference of more advanced vapers looking to further tailor their individual experience.
How Long Do Vape Coils Last?
Depending on how much you vape, coils can last anywhere from a few weeks to several months. Cleaning can extend the life but eventually you will need to replace the coil. If your vape juice is tasting burnt or the vapor production is weak, it’s probably time for a new coil.
How Do You Refill a Tank?
Refilling your vape tank correctly is essential to ensure optimal performance and avoid messes. Follow these steps for a smooth refill:
- Avoid the center tube: When adding e-liquid, be careful not to get liquid down the center airflow tube. This can flood the coils, causing leaks and performance issues.
- Use a fine-tip e-liquid bottle: A fine-tip bottle allows for precise dispensing, reducing the chance of spillage or overfilling.
- Check the fill line: Many vape tanks have a top-fill line. Avoid overfilling to prevent leaks or spills. If your tank doesn’t have a marking, leave a small gap at the top to avoid overflow when reassembling the tank.
- What to do if you overfill: If you accidentally overfill your tank, detach it from the battery, soak up excess e-liquid with a paper towel, and blow through the airflow tube to clear any leftover liquid.
- Let the wick absorb the e-liquid: After filling, allow the vape juice to soak into the wick for 5–10 minutes. This ensures your coils are saturated and prevents a burnt taste when you power on your device.
How Do You Clean Vape Tanks?
As with any vaping equipment used over time, build up accumulates on tanks. However, it’s possible to extend the life of your tanks with a little extra cleaning and maintenance. Here are some tips:
- Basic cleaning is easy: just take apart all the components of your tank and run them under hot tap water.
- You can rinse wicks as well, however you should remove as much moisture as you can with a paper towel and then let them dry for 24 hours before using them again.
- Placing wicks in a sealed container of rice will help them dry more quickly.
- For more heavy duty cleaning of gunky heating coils, soaking the heads in pure grain alcohol or strong clear liquor can help. Don’t use normal rubbing alcohol.
- At some point, you just have to replace your coil. It’s a good rule of thumb to try these cleaning processes once or twice, but after that, you might just reach a point of no return.
