Vaping and e-cigs have experienced significant growth in recent years, gaining popularity as more and more people make the switch from old-school cigarettes. Along with the increase in popularity has come a certain level of criticism, as well as the spreading of misinformation about the supposed dangers of electronic cigarettes. There are some people with little to no knowledge about the science of vaping that continuously protest about vaping being the newest bad-for-you trend. Unfortunately, mass media has jumped on the misinformation train as well, leaving the public very confused about whether or not e-cigs are a better alternative to tobacco cigarettes.

Here at VaporFi, part of our commitment to the vaping industry includes educating and informing our customers as well as the general public, specifically working to dispel e-cig danger myths. With a bit of science and some cold hard facts, here are a few of the biggest vaping danger myths, debunked.

E-Cigs are Just as Bad for Your Health as Traditional Cigarettes

Most people are aware that traditional tobacco cigarettes have been proven to be detrimental to your health. Cigarettes have been linked to a variety of issues ranging from respiratory issues to decreased sense of smell and taste. Many people took one look at e-cigs and decided that because the method of intake is similar, the negative effects must be as well. Actually, that couldn’t be further than the truth. Unlike cigarettes, with a mile-long list of mystery chemicals and known carcinogens, the e-liquid that is inhaled using e-cigs only has three to four simple ingredients.

Furthermore, a recent scientific study conducted by the Department of Cardiology at the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center in Greece actually discovered that compared to cigarettes, e-cigs have a far less negative effect on blood pressure and heart rate. The team also studied diastolic function, and they found that cigarettes severely impaired diastolic function, while e-cigs had absolutely zero effect. Interestingly, the Royal College of Physicians and Public Health England (both located in the UK) both came to the conclusion that vaping is 95 percent safer than traditional cigarettes.

E-Cigs are Even More Addictive Than Regular Cigarettes

This myth is one of the most common, despite being completely false. The dangerously addictive chemical that this myth refers to is, of course, nicotine. It is true that nicotine is addictive, and can be present in both traditional cigarettes and e-cigs, but there is more to this story. Two separate studies conducted at Virginia Commonwealth University showed that e-cigs actually deliver less nicotine than tobacco smoke, with far less of the chemical ever reaching your bloodstream.

Also, consider that mods actually allow you to better regulate your nicotine level, giving you the option to gradually taper off your usage, eventually going nicotine-free. Many people transition to vaping as a way to stop smoking regular cigarettes, because they are interested in lowering their nicotine intake. All of that to say, e-cigs are most definitely not more addictive than traditional cigarettes.

E-Cigs are Likely to Blow up in Your Hand

This myth is one that the media has had a hand in spreading, with their dramatic coverage of a few incidents caused by improper use or manufacturer’s defects. A e-cig is no more likely to explode in your hand than your smartphone, despite what the news stories may have you believe. Like any piece of electrical equipment, e-cigarettes do require a basic level of safety and education.

For vapers that use mods and external batteries, it is important to be aware of factors such as battery safety and Ohm’s law. Understanding what resistance can be safely run on your mod, based on your type of battery, is a basic responsibility for any vaper. If you are new to vaping, you may not want to choose the most complex mod right away. Give yourself some time to become familiar with the basics, and try a starter kit. Once you have learned your way around and understand basic safety precautions, you can always upgrade to something new.

Like any new innovation, e-cigs are in somewhat of a transitional period that involves battling a lot of misinformation and misplaced panic. Many people have rushed to make a false connection between e-cigs and traditional tobacco cigarettes, assuming that the two share the same level of danger and negative health effects.

Thankfully, VaporFi and other leaders in the vaping industry are committed to reaching out and providing the education that will clear up the confusion.
