On May 5, 2016, the FDA released a 499-page document outlining new regulations placed on the e-cigarette/vaping industry that came to many as a shock. These new regulations categorize vape mods, tanks, e-liquids, and accessories the same as traditional, combustible tobacco products – regardless of the many scientific studies released providing a counter argument and even exhibiting how vaporizers are 95% less harmful than regular cigarettes.
The United States is one of the only countries to see the vaping industry in this light; the UK on the other hand views these products as a means to quit smoking. To make matters even worse, it is suspected these new regulations with be detrimental to the industry and remove 99.9% of vapor products currently on the market. However, if we as a community come together and take action against the new regulations, we may able to overturn the FDA’s ruling of e-cigarettes as tobacco products!
You may be asking yourself, “How can I make a difference?” Here’s 4 ways to help:
Sign the Official White House Petition
Already exceeding 50% of its 100,000 goal, this petition still needs 42,191 signatures by June 4, 2016 to get a response from the White House. Click here, and simply fill in your information to electronically sign. By sharing this with your friends, it has the potential to virally spread like wildfire and see those required signatures.
Send a Message to Your Representative
The FDA Deeming Authority Clarification Act of 2015 (HR 2058), introduced by Representative Tom Cole of Oklahoma, would save the U.S. vapor industry from being decimated by improper regulations by the FDA. This bill would amend the Food, Drug, and Cosmetics Act to change the predicate date for “deemed tobacco products.” This change would allow for all vapor products currently on the market to remain on the market without being subject to the burdensome pre-market FDA approval application process.
We are asking members who are not residents in Representative Cole’s district to send a written letter by traditional means. You can print out the pre-written letter here. On that page, you will see the mailing address to his Washington, DC office. As usual, you are encouraged to write your own letter adding your personal story, but feel free to use the one provided.
Send a Message to Your Attorney General
To find your state’s Attorney General, please click this link. Once you do so and find their contact information, please compose a message urging them to support Iowa’s Attorney General, Tom Miller, regarding a debate on the scientific merits of vaping.
Share your story with CASAA as part of their “Testimonial Project”
The Consumer Advocates for Smoke-free Alternatives Association (CASAA) is collecting success-story testimonials from smokers who used smoke-free alternatives to quit or reduce their smoking. The testimonials are posted on their public web page for everyone to see.
This public collection of success stories will be a powerful response to those who want to restrict access to e-cigarettes and other smoke-free products. Their goal is to present a large collection of compelling individual reports that will make it impossible for anyone to claim that substitution of low-risk alternatives (e-cigarettes, snus, and other smoke-free tobacco/nicotine products) is not a proven method for quitting smoking. Click here to add your story!
Share this information with your friends, post links on your social channels, email your #vapefam – just put it out there so we can help this spread like wildfire. We will not be silenced! Together we can make a difference and save this industry!
