Thanks to the lean design of most vape mods, vaporizer manufacturers use OLED indicators to send a variety of signals to the user. Oftentimes these warnings come in the form of blinking lights of different colors.
The flashing lights are meant to catch your attention and help you realize that there may be a problem. While you should always read your e cigarette owner’s manual to decode the blinking signal, this quick guide explains some common reasons for the alerts so you can get back to your vape juice.
Reasons Mods Blink
Depending on your device’s type of display, blinking lights may be used to indicate a single condition or a number of different conditions. The most common reasons that vaporizers blink are described below, along with tips for resolving them.
Reason #1: A Loose Battery
Sometimes, the battery connection in your vape isn’t sufficient. This is often caused by a loose battery. If the battery is not screwed in properly, it won’t be able to fully charge and the indicator light will continue to blink.
To fix this issue, unscrew the battery and re-screw it back in to make sure everything is firmly connected. While you are fiddling with the battery, it doesn’t hurt to take a clean cotton swab and wipe off the connection points, just in case there is a buildup of grime or e juice. Clean your tank as well, just to ensure that there is no lint hiding out that can interfere with the device’s function.
Reason #2: A Stuck Activation Button
One of the most common reasons for a blinking display light is luckily also one of the easiest to resolve. It is possible that the activation button (the button you press to activate the device) is simply stuck in a slightly pushed-in position.
Many device lights will blink when you have held the button down for too long, and you may have experienced this situation yourself. However, sometimes it is dirt, rather than the user, that is responsible for the button being pushed in for too long. Simply take a wipe cloth or cotton swab and clean out the area around the button. If the light turns off, then you have resolved the issue!
Reason #3: Wrong Components
Another possible cause of a blinking display light could be that you have incompatible components paired up in your device. For example, many devices will alert you if you have installed a replacement coil with a too-low resistance level.
If this is the issue, you have a decision to make: either you switch out the mismatched part for one that is compatible, or you upgrade your device to fit the part you want to use. In the case of a low-resistance coil, one option to is utilize a sub-ohm device instead of a standard mod.
Reason #4: Activation of Safety Features
Finally, most devices are equipped with certain safety features that will lead to a blinking display light. If this is the case, don’t ignore it – safety features are there for a reason. Use your manual’s troubleshooting guide to pinpoint the specific issue, and then take it from there.
If the battery charge, a poor connection, mismatched components, safety feature activation, or a stuck activation button is not the issue, then you will need to dig a bit deeper. You should never ignore a blinking indicator light, because it could be the sign of a serious issue.
If you notice that your mod’s blinking, stop vaping immediately and begin checking for the reason. Read the manual for your device and you should find a checklist of things to look for that are specific to your model. To help you with this, we’ve identified some of the most common mods vapers use and reasons why they blink.
Our sleek, function-focused devices are also equipped with blinking indicators to alert you of various issues:
The Rocket 3
On the Rocket 3, red LEDs are used to indicate problems. For instance, the status of the mod’s battery is conveniently communicated as the LED light changes from green to red as the battery discharges. A low battery that requires immediate attention is pointed out by seven flashes of the LED. And, a short circuit causes the device to flash three times and shut down.
The Rebel 3
Similarly, on the Rebel 3, LEDs are used to indicate battery life. The indicator also flashes if you hold the firing button down for too long, putting your device at risk of overheating.
The Pro 3 features extra safety features, as follows:
- If your battery reads too low, the device will blink red and shut down.
- If your device overheats, it will blink three times before turning off.
- In the case of a short circuit, the mod will turn the device off automatically.
Following standard conventions, you can look to the green, white and red colors to determine how much power remains in the battery.
The Air 2 uses red flashing lights to show you that your battery has been discharged and needs immediate attention. It will also blink rapidly if it detects a short circuit condition.
Orbit and Atom
Similar to e-liquid vaporizers, the Orbit and Atom are dry herb vaporizers that also rely upon LED lights to inform you of when your battery is in need of charging. They will also flash if they detect that anything is getting too hot.
These are some of the most popular products on the market today. If you’re frustrated with your mod blinking and can’t fire your SMOK vape tank, here is our troubleshooting guide:

This T-PRIV 220W Starter Kit is unique in that the LED lights are used as a fun entertainment feature that light up as you vape, with three different lighting styles you can choose from (Normal, Jump, and Fade). If you have noticed the LED lights turning on or off, cycling, or simply in a different color than you initially chose, you may have inadvertently changed the setting.
