What is a Dab Pen or Wax Pen?

Wax vape pens, also known as dab pens, are similar to dry herb vape pens. Utilizing similar technology, rather than vaporizing dry herbs, wax pens are used to vaporize concentrates. Dabs is another word for concentrates. Wax pens have a heating coil versus a chamber for dry herbs. The dab is placed directly on the atomizer coil. Wax/dab pens are used to provide a method for the consumption of thick oils and herb and flower concentrates. Here are the components you can expect to find in a wax vape pen kit:

  • Mouthpiece – The glass mouthpiece is used to draw vapor from the heating coil. The tip will come in different sizes to give you better airflow and balance of temperature control when using a wax vape pen.
  • Atomizer / Heating Coil – This is where the vaporizing takes place. The atomizer is contained in the top attachment where wax pens vaporize materials. Using a Dab Tool; the wax is placed inside the chamber and on top of the coil. There are many different types of coils inside the chamber of dab rigs. Coils are responsible for the heating and vaporizing of the wax or concentrate. We will talk more about this a little later.
  • Battery / Mod – Much the same as dry herb vape pens and any other vaporizer or mod, wax pens share the universal 510 threaded connection. With more advanced wax mods, temperature control may be available to control the heating temperature of the atomizer. You should always check your atomizer’s heating range before trying a non-default setting.
  • USB Chargers - most vape kits come with USB chargers for dab pen batteries. We offer a complete kit. Our industry-leading dab pen batteries recharge fast and last for a long time.

What Are Dabs?

Dabs are a concentrated form of the active ingredients extracted from plant materials. There are different types of dabs and concentrates. For example:

  • Rosin - very much like a wax
  • Crumble - similar consistency to a thick honey
  • Budder - more fluid concentrate, like a batter

How does a Dab Coil Work?

You probably have a basic understanding of how the process works based on the description above. But we will summarize the process here. The user will place wax /concentrate into the heating chamber. When given power from the battery, the dab coil will heat. The vaporization process will leave little to nothing behind.

Not all atomizer coil materials are suitable for dabs or wax. For example, the Kanthal atomizers used in regular vapes are not suitable for concentrate vapes. Rod atomizers and ceramic atomizers are okay depending on the configuration. However, there is one dab coil materials that is better than all the rest. Mig Vapor carborundum coils set the standard.

Carborundum dab coils heat fast and cool down fast. That is perfect for portable dab pens because sometimes you just want a quick hit and not a long session. In addition, carborundum coils are textured and hold the dab in place. A textured surface is better because a smooth coil surface allows concentrate material to slide off the coil and into the base where it goes to waste. The textured carborundum coil holds the wax to the coil.

There is no single atomizer coil for both dry herb and wax. Each type of material requires a different type of coil.

How To Use A Dab Pen

The following are basic instructions on how to use a dab pen or wax pen. Always ensure you read the user manual before using a wax vape pen for the first time. The method may change depending on the device. For example, using a Dr. Dabber, Galaxy Vaporizer, or a KandyPens Kstick with glass globe is different. Ultimately, you will find the best dab pens right here at VaporFi! Follow these guidelines when learning how to use a vape pen for dabs, waxes, and concentrates:

  • Concentrates come pre-prepared from dispensaries. Do not buy black market cannabis products!
  • Put the concentrate into an easily accessible place, you will want to access this more than once depending on the quantity you like to vaporize.
  • Using the dab tool, scoop a small amount of concentrate onto the dab tool. Use the dab tool to place the concentrate into the heating chamber of your device.
  • Assemble the device.
  • Make sure the dab pen batteries are charged.
  • Turn on the device.
  • This will now be ready to vape.
  • When you're ready to vaporize the concentrate, hold the power button and inhale deeply. Using a direct to lung pulling method is the most common with dab pens.
  • Once the dab or wax is vaporized, open up the heating chamber and all the concentrate should be gone.
  • Repeat the process until you've vaped the desired amount.

After use, always ensure you clean the device. Remove any extract from the heating chamber that could be left behind.

NOTE: Whether using a desktop vaporizer or portable dab, vaporizers and dab pens produce a very concentrated vapor. It is not like smoking weed! The vapor will contain more active ingredients than smoke. So take it easy! At least at first until you get used to how a dab pen works.

How to find the best Wax or Dab Vaporizer Pen

There are many different components, features and functions that must be understood before finding the best wax vape pen. There are many to choose from. Some examples are the Atmos Kiln, the Source Orb, Linx Ares, Dr Dabber Ghost, and many more. Each uses different types of heating chambers, vape pods and atomizers.

Here is everything you need to know before you get your first dab vape pen kit:

Atomizers

Types of Atomizers – Previously, I mentioned different types of atomizers or heating chambers. The type of atomizer provides different experiences with wax pens. Here are the most common types of Atomizers:

Wicked – Similar to sub ohm vape pens, wicked atomizers have a coil and wicking material. Coming with either a single or double wicked style these atomizers are best with oil pens for fluid concentrates. The concentrate is soaked into the wick, then vaporized creating a smooth and flavor intensive pull from the device.

Wickless – This is the more common atomizer style for wax vape pens. Used for more solid and thicker concentrates, wickless atomizers have a rod within them usually made out of ceramics, carborundum, or quartz. The rod atomizer provides a huge amount of heat around them, vaporizing anything within close proximity. The more rods, the higher the temperature and heating radius.

Flat Ceramic Dish – Much the same as dry herb vape pens, this is the latest technology found in wax and concentrate vaporizers. Essentially, putting a ceramic dish above the coils to remove any exposed coils. They heat the ceramic dish which heats the concentrate located on top of the dish. This is the safest heating method found in Wax Pens to date. It also provides a more well-rounded vapor.

Dab Pen Batteries

Batteries / Mods – In addition to atomizers, wax vape pens come with different rechargeable vape battery options. As mentioned before, the majority of all vape pens feature the universal 510 threaded connection, which allows 510 connected batteries onto the base of your wax pen. Always make sure your heating chamber is compatible with the temperature control range of the battery.

Wax Pen Batteries – Featuring a 510 threaded connection, a wax vape pen battery will typically be a standard battery that comes with your device in the complete kit. These are the safest to use due to automated temperature settings. These will typically come within a range of 900 mAh to 1300 mAh.

Variable Voltage Batteries – Variable power vape batteries or more commonly known as ""Mods"" are only for advanced users. Featuring a 510 threaded connection, mods can be used with dab tanks like the Mig Vapor Brain Fogger. Choose your desired voltage, wattage or temperature setting at the click of a button. A mod gives the user control over herb vaporization, however, it opens issues and risks. Heating chambers and atomizers have the desired heating range. When using a custom mod stay within the recommended wattage range. Dab rigs do not require a lot of power to vaporize materials. Always ensure you know the heating range before changing any settings.

Magnetic Connections – Traditionally, vape mods, vaporizers and dab vape pens are 510 threaded. However, some like Dr. Dabber opt for a magnetic connection. This gives the user the ability to easily access the heating chamber, but they sometimes fall apart at inopportune times! The battery will still be 510 threaded.

Is A Dab Pen A Vape?

Pen vapes come in a variety of forms. Some pens use oil cartridges. Others have a heating element for vape juice. The Magic Flight uses natural energy. The Kiln RA vaporizer is not for concentrate oils. Mig Vapor's Herb-e 7 is for vaping wax.

Look, it can be very confusing because there is a different type of vape for each type of material. A vape pen for dabs is indeed considered a vape. But keep in mind that vaping is a huge category.

In addition, understand that oil vape pens are different. Oil pens do not vaporize because oil does not vaporize! Instead, oil is heated to the smoke point. So while all of the various vape devices are called ""vapes"", that does not necessarily mean that they all vaporize materials. Herb vaporization depends on the form of the materials. Check the specifications of any vape tank, dab tank, pen or what have you to ensure that it is the right tool for the job. For our purposes today, we are focussing on dab pens for wax and concentrates.

How Much Does A Good Dab Pen Cost?

A good dab pen can cost anywhere from $30 to over $100. It depends on a number of factors from size, battery, atomizer, and other factors. Desktop vaporizers cost the most. The Mig Rig with glass globe attachment is an example of a desktop-style that is designed for home use. However, most vaporizer pens for concentrates are portable. Devices with variable voltage batteries can also cost more.

Here is something you should know about costs. Price is not always the best indicator of quality. Unfortunately, the price is often determined by where you buy. For example, some dispensaries and head shops have huge mark-ups. They sell Puffco Pro, Grenco Science, and other devices, which are fine. But they also sell generic, imported oil vape pens and dab vapes that are total junk.

At VaporFi, we have a collection of top-notch vaporizers and dab pens. Not to mention electronic cigarettes! Moreover, our prices include an option for every budget.
