What is an Atomizer?

Generally speaking, an atomizer is a device that serves the purpose of creating mist out of a liquid. This technology is used in many different forms, one of them being for vaping. One element of an atomizer is a heating coil, created from a piece of resistance wire. This coil heats up, which in turn raises the temperature of the e-liquid. This transforms it from a liquid form into a mist, or vapor, enabling it to be inhaled by the user.

The wires that make up the heating coil can range from stainless steel to titanium, with the device containing the vape coil also varying in construction material. The speed at which it heats up depends on several different factors like the Ohm resistance, spacing of coil wraps, material and the settings of your vape device.

Ultimately, the atomizer’s key role is to heat your e-liquid to turn it into a smoke-able, delicious vapor. It accomplishes this by providing heat to the wick material, which is coated in a flavored e-liquid. This liquid then vaporizes, coming through the mouthpiece where you can breathe it in.

Depending on the model, there may be special airflow ports on the sides of the bottom where you can customize the way the air is drawn across the coils, adjusting your vaping results.

For optimal performance, atomizers and their components (such as coils) should be replaced regularly.

How is an Atomizer’s Power Measured?

You may have seen the word “ohms” used to refer to atomizers, but not be familiar with its meaning. Ohms are used to measure the amount of resistance in the vape coils of an atomizer. All you really need to know is that the lower the number of ohms, the more power (wattage) that is required by the atomizer.

What Does “Sub-Ohm” Mean?

If an atomizer is described as having a sub-ohm coil, it means that it has a resistance of less than 1 ohm. Some advanced vapers use the “sub-ohm method” because they believe it increases flavor to new levels. Sub-ohm vaping involves a certain level of experience and technical know-how, so be sure to do your research before trying it and use a trusted brand and quality model.

Are there Different Types of Atomizers?

The short answer to this question is yes. As with many pieces of vaping equipment, the possibilities for customization are nearly endless. Depending on your level of experience, personal preferences and general vaping style, there are many different kinds of atomizers to meet your needs. Each comes with its pros and cons and is geared toward different vapers.

If you are using a clearomizer or cartomizer, you will find that the atomizer is already installed. Otherwise, you have three different atomizer options to choose from: disposable cartridges, replacement coil head atomizers and rebuildable atomizers.

Disposable Cartridges

One of the more inexpensive options, disposable cartridges are great for beginning vapors. They are inexpensive and easy to interchange, only requiring you to unscrew the old cartridge and screw in a new one. You will know it’s time for this easy switch when your vapor takes on a somewhat burnt taste, indicating that the coil is at the end of its life. Disposable cartridges are typically sold in packs of five.

One downside to disposable cartridges is that, in the long one, the cost may add up more quickly that you would like. Also, with limited flavor and vapor production potential, they often fall by the wayside as vapers become more experienced, looking for a richer vaping experience. Regardless, they are an excellent place to start your vaping journey.

Replaceable Coil Head Atomizers

The next step up on the atomizer learning curve, replacement coil head atomizers, are a smart investment due to their reusability and higher quality. This option involves pre-mounted coils on a base that unscrews from the bottom of your atomizer, making them easy to replace when necessary.

This small feature makes it a top choice for vapers since performance and ease of building sees a big improvement. You will enjoy more advanced options with replacement coil head atomizers, like the ability to adjust airflow control, giving you the ability to better customize your vaping experience.

Rebuildable Atomizers

As you gain more and more vaping experience, you may find that a rebuildable atomizer is the best way to go. Although they are the most complex type, they outshine the other forms of atomizers in terms of performance and customization options.

The rebuildable atomizer comes in two varieties, a drip atomizer or a tank atomizer. Both types have a building deck with terminal posts so all you need to do for installation is to remove the small screws in each of the posts, slip in the ends of your coils and retighten.

Depending on your deck, you may have two or even three posts, allowing you to add more than one coil in varying arrangements, customizing your build.

Drip atomizers have a shallow well that holds a couple drops of e-liquid at a time. Because the liquid goes directly to the coils, drip atomizers are generally believed to offer better vapor and flavor quality. A drawback of this type is that vaping can become more complicated since you are required to continuously refill with liquid.

Tank atomizers allow you to store several milliliters of e-liquid at a time so vaping sessions can go much longer without a refill. There is the added convenience of not having to carry extra liquid on you all the time, which is something that sways many vapers.

Ultimately, choosing between drip and tank atomizers just comes down to preference. Although rebuildable atomizers do require a bigger investment in terms of time and money, the payoff is in the high quality of the vaping experience. Some experienced vapers even learn to build their own coils from raw materials, which can save a lot of money in the long run.

You also have the added benefit of being able to re-wick the vape coils, which involves replacing the wicking material with a fresh piece. Also, you are able to clean the coils, removing any old flavors or lingering tastes. This whole process does require a certain level of skill and know-how, but it is an art that can certainly be learned.

What is the Difference between Single Coil and Dual Coil?

Atomizers are made with either one heating element (a single coil atomizer) or two (a dual coil cartomizer). In a dual coil model, each coil has the same amount of resistance, wired in parallel. In layman’s terms, this simply means that a dual coil device is capable of producing double the vapor but does require a higher level of battery power.

How Do You Find a High-Quality Atomizer?

Above all, find a quality vape company that you trust. With vaping a fast-growing industry, there are plenty of companies that are taking advantage of customers and taking hard-earned dollars for below-standard atomizers and other vaping equipment. There is a world of difference between the vaping experience with low-quality equipment and e-liquid and one with premium, high-quality items.

Read customer reviews and get to know other people in the vaping community. One of the best ways to learn about quality vaping products is to talk to people who have tried a wide variety and get their inside knowledge of what’s out there.

Carefully consider your personal preferences when selecting an atomizer and be honest with yourself about your must-have features and level of experience. Are you a vaping newbie who has a bit to learn, or do you feel comfortable taking on a challenge? Do you need convenience above all else, or do you have time for a more drawn-out, complex process? The answers to these questions will point you in the right direction for an atomizer that works for you.
