If you’re ready to quit smoking and you haven’t found a method that works for you, then vaping may well be an alternative for you to consider. In case you’re wondering exactly what ‘Vaping’ is, here’s a definition:
1. To inhale and exhale the vapor produced by an electronic cigarette or similar device.
A vapor cigarette is an electronic inhaler that gives out vapors from an aerosol mist. This gives the general effect of smoking a cigarette. Other common names include e-cigarette (or e-cig) and electronic cigarette. For the purposes of this discussion, I’ll be talking about refillable, not disposable units. Most of these are roughly comparable in size to a pen light or a magic maker. They are composed of a rechargeable battery, an atomizer (or heating coil), and a refillable reservoir for e liquid.
Okay so now that you know basically what Vaping is, the question remains: why quit smoking with vapor? Over the years, a number of smoking cessation techniques have hit the market. Some examples include:
- Nicotine Patches
- Nicotine Gum
- Cold Turkey
With so many choices, surely you’re wondering just why Vapor is the method for you. Here are 6 reasons why using a vaporizer to quit smoking might be the way to go.
Keeping Up the Act: Muscle Memory
Unlike any of the methods mentioned, Vaping helps simulate the psychological attachment you’ve developed with the act of smoking a cigarette. The act of smoking and the rituals that make it up, are a big part of what the smoker is actually addicted to. When you’re Vaping, you go through those familiar motions attached to smoking. In doing so, you maintain that muscle memory you’ve created from smoking over the years, but at the same time you eliminate actually taking in tobacco smoke.
Maintaining the ‘Throat Hit’
Researching this topic I’ve found a lot of reference to the ‘Throat Hit’ that cigarette smokers enjoy. The meaning of the phrase ‘Throat Hit’ was eluding me at first because I quit smoking cigarettes years ago, but I do still enjoy cigars occasionally and, (even though you don’t inhale cigar smoke), I still sometimes have a slight temptation to inhale. I think it’s sort of a leftover ‘euphoric recall’ of the sensation of inhaling smoke. I gave it some thought and I started remembering that tingly sort of feeling you get in the back of your throat…suddenly it clicked. The universal sentiment seems to be that vaping is the one and only non-smoking alternative that allows you to experience this sensation and yet still eliminate the intake of smoke.
With the exception of Cold Turkey, cost of vaping is far less expensive than any of the smoking cessation methods I’ve listed. Of course, there are other methods and this assertion is based on the assumption that you are planning to manipulate the nicotine content of your Vape Juice to slowly wean yourself off. On the other hand, if you continue to Vape with 0% nicotine, I suppose you could argue that the continued costs might eventually outweigh the more limited expenditures using methods that have a finite use period.
Convenient, Versatile and Non-Prescription
Unlike a number of the available smoking cessation methods, vaping is something that you don’t need a prescription in order to try. Of course, the implications of this advantage goes hand-in-hand with the cost comparison, but vaping as an alternative to smoking has a convenience and versatility factor that cannot be denied. There’s certainly nothing wrong with consulting a doctor in order to find ways to quit smoking, but again, if you do want to give vaping a try as an alternative, you won’t be required to schedule a doctor’s visit to do it.
Flexible e-liquid Nicotine Content
We talked about nicotine content briefly under the topic of affordability, but there’s a lot more to say about the flexibility of nicotine content in vaping. As I’ve already mentioned, the majority of users trying to quit would be slowly reducing the nicotine content, but despite the adverse effects of nicotine, some people would prefer, (for any number of reasons), to continue at present levels. Vaping provides that alternative and allows you to continue to fulfill your nicotine requirements without the added danger of inhaling the smoke.
Clearly the ability to choose what amount of nicotine you want in your e-liquid is a great benefit. Pretty much every manufacturer in this industry sells e-juice in a variety of nicotine levels (including 0mg). The content is measured by milligram (mg). If your smoking habit is around a pack a day, your starting point would be around 18mg – 24mg.
Tip: Just about every manufacturer in this industry offers ‘sample’ sizes. The price per bottle can vary anywhere from about $2-$5, but the great thing is that they allow you to try out a few different things in order to determine what works for best for you.
Keep in mind that no matter what your nicotine levels are, Vaping may leave you feeling more thirsty than usual. It’s a normal side-effect that can be readily fixed by simply drinking more water (which, by the way, is ALWAYS good advice!).
‘Wrap’ it Up
If you have already made the switch from cigarettes to vaping, then you are already enjoying the benefits. On the other hand, if you’re reading this and you haven’t made the switch, keep in mind that vaping not only significantly reduces your lung exposure to dangerous carcinogens, but also makes people want to hang around you more, since you no longer smell like an ashtray! Of course, the list of potential benefits goes on ad infinitum. Vaping vs. Smoking is a great way to:
- Eliminate that nasty smoke smell in your hair, your clothes, your car and your house.
- Avoid being ostracized and relegated to that parking lot ‘smoking area’! Now you can hang out with the rest of your friends without offending anyone standing nearby.
- Do away with those cigarette burns on your clothes, your car seats, and so forth.
- Stop rushing through important events in order to escape to a ‘smoke-friendly’ zone. You can Vape almost anywhere!
